If you’re applying for a passport for the first time, follow these steps:

1. Complete a passport application in person at a U.S. passport office; a federal, state, or probate court; or a major post office. To find your regional passport office, check the U.S. State Department Web site, http://travel.state.gov/passport_services.html, or call the National Passport Information Center (877-487-2778) for automated information.

2. Present a certified birth certificate as proof of citizenship. (Bringing along your driver’s license, state or military ID, or Social Security card is also a good idea.)

3. Submit two identical passport-size photos, measuring 2 x 2 inches.You often find businesses that take these photos near a passport office.

Note: You can’t use a strip from a photo-vending machine because the pictures aren’t identical.

4. Pay a fee. For people 16 and over, a passport is valid for ten years and costs $85. For those 15 and under, a passport is valid for five years and costs $70. If you have a passport in your current name that was issued within the past 15 years (and you were over age 16 when it was issued), you can renew the passport by mail for $55. Whether you’re applying in person or by mail, you can download passport applications from the U.S. State Department Web site at http://travel.state.gov/passport_services.html. Allow plenty of time before your trip to apply for a passport; processing usually takes three weeks, but can take longer during busy periods (especially spring). Expedited service will cost you an additional $60, whether you’re applying for your first passport or are simply renewing it.
